Measuring Religiosity in Non-biblical Spiritual Practices: A New Perspective on I/E and Quest Orientations

For over 50 years the Allport Ross Religious Orientation Scale has been utilized in over 100 studies to measure religiosity. Batson's Quest Scales have been utilized in more than 70 studies. Only one of these studies included respondents whose practice was non-biblically based. The validity of Intrinsic, Extrinsic and Quest orientations and their measurement are called into question in the current study of 171 respondents from non-biblical spiritual practices such as Buddhism, Native American, Wiccan and Metaphysical traditions. Well-established paradigms and attitudes regarding gender and religious orientation are challenged by the study's results. Effects of age, gender, survey design and mainstream culture are examined. Conceptualizing measurement in terms of spirituality rather than religion is discussed, as well as directions for future research.
